I'd found the name on a list of recommended reading for young women by female authors, and had kept the title on my list for a while. But when I finally started it, I could only get 16% of the way through it (I know it was exactly 16% because I have the Kindle version). Hassler spent that entire chunk of book explaining how it feels to be in a twenty-something crisis (more commonly known as a quarter-life crisis, a distinction I didn't find particularly necessary). While I imagine it was very cathartic and personally helpful for her to write about her feelings, and the feelings of women experiencing exactly what she was feeling, it wasn't particularly helpful to me. I found the book kind of limiting and failing to account for quarter-life crises that might differ from the author's own.Hassler also used several phrases I found particularly tone-deaf. For instance, while rattling off a list of one woman's superficial accomplishments, she mentions "a token 'Will' (a gay friend who goes to flea markets with her and actually tells her when she looks fat)." It's clearly a reference to the sitcom 'Will Grace,' but it clearly misses the point of the show — and of friendship — entirely. Will's not a token anything. He's Grace's best friend. Period. You shouldn't try to collect types of friends like a Pokemon trainer of diversity. She also makes the painfully overgeneralized analogy: "men are like dressers and women are like hot air balloons." I was particularly astounded that this cringey phrase made it past an editor for how it over simplifies people and creates stereotypes that supposedly perform. What if you're not a woman who considers herself to be ruled by emotion. What if you're more of a compartmentalizer Or a stoic Or a cynic Plus it's about as original a phrase as "men are from Mars and women are from Venus."Finally, she tossed a Websters dictionary definition in for good measure and I had to give up on the whole thing.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It is one of the best books I have everBy BrittanyI don't write too many reviews on books, or anything for that matter...But I just finished this book after savoring it in a slow read for the last month and I have to say... It is one of the best books I have ever. I'm twenty-seven and this book is exactly what I needed when I needed it. I wish I would have read this book in my early twenties because I would be many years wiser back then if I would have really chewed on everything in this book. She is very wise and offers so much helpful advice, not too mention the stories of her life and others going through the same twenty something process is both refreshing and comforting knowing... I'm not the only one with these fears, struggles, confusions, and feelings of being lost. At the end she also gives awesome references for more books that will helps give direction and wisdom. I plan on reading those too. I know this book is a little older, and there might be newer resources on the subject but the information in no way is outdated and its wisdom for the years to come that I believe are timeless. I am very happy on this read... I took so much from it, it gave me a fresh perspective on myself and my own journey from past to present and future.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Enjoyed this book but it needed more REAL real life examples.By SarahI purchased this book after I graduated college and was overwhelmed by my own quarter-life 'now what' crisis. I enjoyed reading it and working through the writing prompts, and took many notes and had some good insights. However, I did not feel represented in this book, as most of the 'real life' examples were women who were in very high profile profile or high paced white collar careers. What about the stay at home moms or non-profit workers or those working in blue or pink collar positions I fit into the pink collar category and could not relate well to many of the stories, it just needed more variety. After I was done I gave the book to a friend who was going through her own quarter-life crisis and hopefully it was able to help her as well.See all 97 customer reviews... 20 Something 20 Everything : A Quarter-life Woman's Guide ... ... 20 Everything : A Quarter-life Woman's Guide to ... 20 Everything : A Quarter-life Woman's Guide to Balance and Direction ...
