KohutekEaton describes a "new" program --the Arrowsmith Program-- based on Luria's neurological ideas. While new to many, this program has been around for thirty years with its roots in Luria's writings going back even farther. It is unfortunate that the success stories and promise of these efforts are still considered new and not already implemented in schools throughout the Americas. One has to ask if our educational system is so rigid that it cannot see what is a much more effective manner of educating our children. The final chapter stresses that it must be the parents, a child's strongest advocate, who will make the difference in this archaic system. There are three sections of the book: 1) The journey; 2) The stories, and; 3) The outlook. Part 1 describes the author's own struggle in the academic setting to attending graduate school at Boston University to running his own business/school. Also included in this section is a brief insight into the founder of the Arrowsmith Program, Barbara Arrowsmith Young.Section 2 relates a number of success stories of students who went through the program and demonstrated dramatic success both on psycho-educational testing as well as in the academic/social areas of life. Within these eight chapters of case histories are sections of general information which could prove extremely useful to the informed reader --which ALL parents should be!The third section provides a look at the future of those involved in education with neuroplasticity, cognitive training and the Arrowsmith Program. Finally, the Appendices share information about details of the program. This book is readable for a number of audiences. It provides information to professionals in a number of education related fields about a program which is making progress in the field of neuroeducation. The case studies describe to prospective families the "type" of students who might benefit from the program.A concern this reviewer has is that the nature and number of students interviewed for the program and not accepted is not discussed. Related is the proportion of students not completing the program. These topics would be extremely valuable for a family who is searching for and willing to grab onto any glimmer of hope for their child. While I strongly believe that programs such as that described in this book is the way of the future, a warning to parents/students--make haste slowly and don't grab for this hope before you--the informed consumer, checks it out.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This book saved my daughter's life!!By Jason P ThompsonAfter reading this book I knew I had to find an Arrowsmith Program for my daughter. She was depressed and struggling to read dispite 4 years of Orton-Gillingham reading method. One night when I was putting her to bed at age 7 she said to me, "Mommy if they could give me the shot they give the animals at the shelter, I would take it. Because maybe if I came back to this life I could read." That's when we need we had to find something different than the language based/phonics based methods. We got lucky and found Arrowsmith!!!! After three months in the Arrowsmith Program in Virginia she started sounding out words. By the end of the first year of Arrowsmith she was reading chapter books at grade level. Now we can't stop her. She is happy and reads for fun!! We have since started an Arrowsmith Program in Charleston WV at St. Agnes School. We hope to help children never feel as sad as our daughter did. Look at how smart and happy she is now!! 2 of 3 people found the following review helpful.Neuroplasticity and learning disabilitiesBy Robin N. MoirThis is an excellent account of the impressive responses of children with specific learning disabilities to the cognitive exercises of the Arrowsmith program to stimulate neuroplastic changes. The author gives a great deal of detail of the psychoeducational and Arrowsmith assessments of a number of students, before and after the interventions, that document convincingly the surprising and startlingly good remediation and even resolution of the learning disabilities that have occurred, supported by detailed accounts of the students subsequent educational paths. He also describes how the school day is structured and the necessity for sustained highly focused and concentrated work on the prescribed exercises over time in order to achieve these outcomes, which can only occur with teachers who are skilled motivators who can create a positive and fun learning environment. This book will help many parents and educators, as well as healthcare professionals, to gain a better understanding of the varieties of learning disabilities, the severe impact that these can have on the course of a child's education and on self-esteem and emotional wellbeing, in the absence of effective interventions. The conventional approaches to interventions with learning disabled children have generally been compensatory work-arounds with provision, for example, of assistive technology, reader/writers and extended time for examinations, based on the widely-held and established assumption that the underlying disorder of brain structure or function is fixed and unchangeable, whereas the application of neuroplastic principles has demonstrated this not to be the case. The book can be a bit dull for readers without a special interest in this subject because of the level of detail, but those who do have this interest will be rewarded for their efforts.See all 22 customer reviews...
