This was my first time reading this spectacular novel, and having not seen the film, I was thrilled with Mr. Doug's journey around the world.Verne gives painstakingly historically and geographically accurate details throughout the novel, which gives the reader the sense that they are making this famous journey around the world within the hours it takes them to read about it.If you are one for adventure, travel, history, or simply a good read, you will be more than satisfied to procure a copy of Around the World in Eighty Days.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.I actually purchased this because I love Jim DaleBy Kathleen G. AlbrechtI read this book several times a child. I actually purchased this because I love Jim Dale. however no one else seems to have commented on the fact that for a book writing in 1873 the audio version appears to have changed perhaps more of the archaic expressions to things like " no way!" , which to me listening to this audio book really put me off. I have not seen anyone else comment on this. Given that this audio book is likely orientated towards children I have to wonder what license these people took with the text. There are several expressions that are clearly modern and not original to the book, and I think really detract from the story and historical character of the book.However Jim Dale is marvelous as always. I didn't like the musical scoring the background that much as I felt it made the narration harder to understand and again, detracted from just listening to the story.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Stands the Test of Time!By Obi WanThis book really holds up from my youth. When it was written, circumnavigation of the globe was a HUGE endeavor at any speed. Doing it in 80 days was a ridiculous notion. So the book was a pure action novel in it's time.Today I can completely circle the Earth in 24 hours if really wanted to for the cost of a few plane tickets that are publicly available. (Or I could join the space program and circle the entire planet in a little under 90 minutes) So in today's society, Around The World in 80 Days isn't exactly an action story.But it's still a GREAT adventure story! As a kid I read this book and thought it was an amazing adventure. Of course back then just going around the world at any speed sounded amazing. As a kid I barely knew what other States were, much less the other side of the world. When I re-read this recently as an adult, I was worried that I'd destroy my memory of the novel by seeing it in a less interesting light now that I've actually been all over the world.I didn't. It was just an amazing as the first time I read it as a child.Some of Jules Verne's books hold up like that over the years. Some don't. He was one of the most creative futurists of his day. But now the things he saw as existing in the distant future are things that we read about in history books. Sadly, the passage of time dulls some of Verne's amazing works.
