DavisThis is not the book you should buy to learn SketchUp. For that I recommend two others: Start with Google SketchUp 7 for Dummies; follow up with Google SketchUp Cookbook if you want/need to know the program more in depth, say for your work. In either case, it's then that you should definitely read Mike Tadros' excellent Real World Google SketchUp 7. This book extends your understanding of the power of the program.Starting out with setting up your keyboard shortcuts and workspace and carrying on through using templates, scripts, and extensions, Mike covers the groundwork very well. For me, the core of the "real world" was dealing with site plans, importing CAD files, and building exteriors and interiors because that's part of my work. He also thoroughly goes through the creation and application of textures for the model, including how to build a model using a photograph, which is absolutely one of SketchUp's strengths.Although I don't see myself creating dynamic components anytime soon, the author's section on this topic is more in-depth and clear than any I've read.Mike carefully takes us through creating animations, adding dimensions, preparing your model for presentation and printing. Finally, the videos on the bonus CD are terrific, and are teasers for his superb website, and its hours of SketchUp training.45 of 45 people found the following review helpful.Good for experienced users too.By L. I have been using SketchUp Pro for about 3 years mainly for creating Earth and space structures that I later import into Daz Bryce for rendering. This well written, light-hearted, and extremely thorough book is an essential asset for begineers and a valuable reference tool for anyone using SketchUp. Computer software manual writers can often times get over zealous with methods and confuse everyone but themselves. Fortunately Aidan Chopra is not one of those people. If you want to draw most anything you can imagine you need to do two things. First download the free version of SketchUp and second buy this book. SmithI bought the book because I saw SketchUp mentioned several times in woodworking magazines. It seemed like a great way to generate detailed drawings of shop projects, and it is. However, there's almost no chance that anyone can just download the software and figure out how to get much out of it without some guidance. This book helps a new user get started without the aggravation that just muddling around would produce.Like most other books in the "Dummies" series, this one is very easy to read and use. The information is presented in bite-sized chunks, and each new concept is built on what has preceded it. The tone is just right, I think; it's light without being condescending or cutsie, and it's authoritative without being pedantic.I particularly liked the way the author explained how to fix errors. SketchUp is somewhat deceptive; it's pretty easy to get a sort-of-good result, but it's also easy to wander into dead ends. The book describes a mistake, then explains how to erase it and what to do to get the result you were looking for. Even better, it explains how to avoid the mistake in the first place. It sounds like an obvious thing for a good instructional book to do, but it's surprisingly rare.Bottom line: I think I got what I paid for-- and more. I wanted a good, basic instructional book, and this is it. However, it's also a manual that explains how to get beyond the beginner's level as smoothly as possible.
