Hardy is one of my favorite authors, and this story is ranked very high in my list of go-to re-reads.But the editing that went into the digital version of this classic is truly terrible. There are typos, and misspellings, missing punctuation and spacing. For three whole pages, I was baffled beyond words at the repeated use of the completely out-of-context word "toad", until I realized the word was supposed to be "road". Inexcusable. At several points, it felt like entire sentences were missing from the story, and several sentences ended so abruptly, I am almost positive there is more to it than what was printed on the page.Never have I been so disappointed with a digital rendering of a complete work. There were so many unforgiveable mistakes, that there were days I could not even read the book, as much as I love the story. I 100% recommend this book to anyone who loves Hardy. But DO NOT purchase this version. Whoever edited this should be ashamed of themselves. "Professionally proofread," my foot.9 of 9 people found the following review helpful.A terrible reprint of a classic bookBy Charles VaneThis is a terrible reprint of a classic book. It looks like it was typed up by someone who either does not speak English or does not speak it well. There are words and punctuation missing, and random pieces of punctuation stuck in here and there. There are words that are unnecessarily hyphenated as if that's how they appeared at the end of a sentence in the book the text was being lifted from and the typist thought that's how the word should look. The lines of dialogue are not separated out in individual paragraphs and the text runs so close to the inner binding that it's very hard to read. The fact that the word 'copyright' was spelled as two words on the front piece was the first clue that this was a lousy edition. No publisher is listed anywhere and the publishing date (on the last page) corresponds to the date I ordered it. Print-to-order should be ashamed to sell something like this when they also carry editions from reputable publishers. I found this edition so distracting that I gave up reading it and ordered one from Penguin Classics, which, by the way, I had to search for on , because when I just search for the book title the first things that come up are this and other crappy knock-offs. Pathetic!6 of 6 people found the following review helpful.Far From the Madding Crowd is the first novel in the Wessex series by the inimitable Thomas Hardy the great Victorian author!By C. M MillsYesterday I went to see the stunningly beautiful new film of Far From the Madding Crowd. As soon as I arrived home I picked up my newly ordered edition of the 1874 Hardy novel which began his splendid Wessex series set in rural southwest England. I have read the book too many times to count but enjoy each perusal more than the last. This Oxford edition features excellent footnotes and an erudite introduction. The plot is well known to students of English literature. The fetchingly beautiful and romantically inconstant Bathsheba Everdene has inherited a sheep farm from her deceased uncle. She is a young woman who seeks to amaze the farmhands (chapters dealing with them remind us of Shakespeare's use of rude mechanicals. They act as a chorus to comment on the main action of the complex plotting). The novel is rich in biblical allusions. Gabriel Oak is Bathsheba's firs love. He is one of the purest and best characters in all of English fiction; strong as an oak; faithful as his sheepdog George and as watchful of Bathsheba as Gabriel the archangel of God. Sergeant Troy is the soldier in British red who steals Bathsheba's hear for a time until his affair with the hapless and hopeless Fanny Day is revealed in all its stark tragedy. Farmer Boldwood is the middle age suitor who promises Bathsheba a life of comfort with even a piano thrown in for good measure. Hardy was the master of landscape painting in the beautiful region of southwest England. His language is poetry to the ear and makes one glad to be a speaker of the English tongue. Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) is one of my favorite novelist ; after reading this splendid novel I hope he becomes one of yours as well!See all 648 customer reviews...
