If you read ZeVan’s intimate, highly entertaining autobiography, you’ll know why the legendary newsman asked that question. This 317-page trip-down-memory-lane is stuffed full of ZeVan’s “unique personal stories about the iconic people of whose lives (he) was a part.”As documented here, ZeVan crossed paths with a boat load of people, some rich and famous, some not so rich and famous, during his decades in front of and behind the footlights and Klieg lights of the news and entertainment industry. (Don’t believe it Spend some time browsing through the nearly 375, mostly iconic names listed in ZeVan’s three-page, opening acknowledgement section.) But, it’s not just a printed version of Entertainment Tonight. As ZeVan points out in his prologue, in addition to the celebrity stories retold here, the reader’s given a tour of “the places (ZeVan’s) worked and lived.” And it’s a whirlwind tour, as Donald Trump would say, believe me. Sam Donaldson could’ve asked the author, “Is there any where you haven’t lived or worked”But, ZeVan’s memoir is not just about his “Life Among the Giants” of high society. In these pages, ZeVan briefly reveals that he’s had “many personal demons” he’s had to battle on a daily basis. Among those “demons” ZeVan lists “depression, sadness, more hand-to-mouth living than not, handling rejection and other extreme thoughts.” ZeVan released his life story in December of 2015 with the hopes it will help those “who suffer from timidity, self-doubt, depression, pervasive fear of rejection and uncertainty to overcome and defeat those demons.”Above all others, for this reviewer, the highlight is the opening chapter. Here, ZeVan answers his own question, “Who am I, anyway” Here in a little over five pages, the author also unveils his lighter, more positive side. In sort of a Facebook profile format, ZeVan lists his favorite quotations, his favorite films, his favorite music and musicians and his favorite places to live, work and play inside and outside of North America.Another highlight in this reviewer’s opinion, the last couple of pages of ZeVan’s last chapter. Here the author lists “a few things (he’s) learned from (his) jam-packed life so far.” So, who is Barry ZeVan Read this peak behind the news and entertainment curtain and you’ll discover he’s more than just a television and radio personality with perhaps more than his share of highly visible friends. He’s more than a talk show or music show host. He’s more than a stage, film or television singer or actor. He’s more than a film critic-reviewer-columnist-blogger-commentator. He’s more than “Barry ZeVan, the weatherman.”Knowing ZeVan personally as this reviewer does, it’s fair to say, if Barry were advising someone wishing to follow in his footsteps he would say, “Develop a thick skin.” That’s especially true for on-air talent wannabes. Sadly, ZeVan would also advise a beginner, “It’s not what you know, but who you know, that makes things happen” in your professional life. Finally, ZeVan would subscribe to the axiom, “the choices one makes in life always makes one wonder, ‘What if . . .’”That said, this collection of “entertaining, enlightening, educational, insightful, powerful, quality stories” could very well have been simply titled “Choices.” Or, how about “The Road Less Traveled” Or, even, “The Road Not Taken” Oops! Those last two titles have already been well-traveled and well-taken. Of course. Do yourself a favor. The book shares stories of his life which was sunny to partly cloudy,with a few storms and a couple of tornado near-misses, and yet a life in which he "weathers it all" and simply brings sunshine to thousands.Despite a myriad of roadblocks and detours this good man built an international super highway into the hearts of people!
