I remember having a copy of Tales from Shakespeare by Charles and Mary Lamb as a child and the illustrations were colorful and vibrant. I think the illustration of Nick Bottom as a donkey in Queen Titania's arms is one of the first reasons I loved Shakespeare. I have looked for such a copy for years for my granddaughter, and I thought I might have stumbled upon it. I did not. This is 99.5% text and the few (cannot be emphasized how few) illustrations are black and white etchings. Written for young people, it reads like fairy tales; the elegant simplicity of the language and the story lines do not hide the complexity of emotions and human interactions contained in the original script. Frequent use of the original language in critical parts gives readers a feel for the Shakespearean stage.
