Its a big cast, and if you don't meet them organically, you will likely get lost really swiftly. One of the strengths AND weaknesses of this series is the re-occurring jokes. There are a few running gags, and some references which will be utterly context-less if this is your first exposure to this series.So go back to the author page and buy book 1. Or head over to your local library. Or some combination thereof. Then come back.Back Good.I thought I was going to pee myself I was laughing so hard. I very much enjoyed the hell out of this book, even though it begins with a logical extension of the previous volume and then - because the author can - takes a leap down the "Alice-In-Wonderland" waterslide to the left, depositing us on an almost-unrelated tangent which makes up the bulk of this book's story. That said, I really enjoyed this book, even if the danged thing was over too quickly (which is not a reflection of the plot length nor its pacing - both of those are dead-on - but rather of my penchant to read in marathon sessions until I close the book). It was perhaps especially enjoyable for me as I cut my teeth on the Barsoom, Pellicidar, and Venus stories of Edgar Rice Burroughs - this had the same flavor if a far different execution.Adventure with humor is a difficult act, even if the author makes it look easy. Clever dialogue, rich detail and characterization in an elaborate mileau, small, easily digestible chunks of romance, and above all an enduring faith in the human spirit makes this (and all the other books in the series) well worth the cost of admission.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.I love the Alien series and usually can't wait to finishBy Kindle CustomerI love the Alien series and usually can't wait to finish, but with this book, I have to force myself to continue. Ms. Koch seems to have lost a bit of the Kitty voice. Kitty has matured a bit, but not as likable. Before she was more endearing where now she's more annoying, bordering on arrogant. The inner dialogue, which used to be fun is now extremely tedious and overdone in this book. Ms. Koch spends way too much time on descriptions, theories w/Algar, etc. I've had the book since the release date and I'm only half way through. I've read several other books before forcing myself to get back to finish this one. Maybe it gets better towards the end of the book, but I don't know if I'll ever make to the end. Ms. Koch and her characters seem to be wandering all over the place. She also created a lot of characters to play with, but there's no depth, they seem more cartoonish rather than "Alien," and you get the sense they're not going to be memorable, either. There really is a "Separation" with the way the planet's inhabitants are treated, too. They're pointedly cared for, but that's because they seem to be viewed as less than, and victims. Being only half way through, this is a definite misstep. Maybe I'll change my opinion once I can slog my way to the end.I would have liked a bit more re the aftermath of the last book. So much went on in the last book, that perhaps Ms. Koch didn't know where to go with it. She wrapped up the parallel world visit with a few sentences here and there, but no real treatment. She played it out like the excuse her Kitty used for the personality change - nothing to worry about it was the concussion talking. That's that. Then (a bit unbelievable even for Kitty) they're right on in to what to do about the 'Mastermind' but whoops they're transported to another world with sensient animals from big bugs to wolverines. What OK Koch is on her usual twisty plot path, but really, Kitty not discussing her absence or truly catching up with the people she missed (Mother, Jeff, Chuckie, etc.) is out of character. Again, maybe once she saves yet another planet and gets back to the embassy she'll have her confabs and verbally gush in Kittyisms. Or not. I am definitely no longer interested, at the halfway point in the book, in Kitty or the newly introduced inhabitants or the impending civil war or where Jamie is or if the Horrors will be attacking or anything else that can be piled on to this mess. Sorry, but I am seriously feeling the aptly titled "Separation" and am not inclined to continue.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.Space, the final frontier...Alien Collective style.By belen47We get to see our team in a completely new environment. Finally when our alien\human group are poised to take on the big bad.. Something unexpected happens.I really have to hand it Ms Koch, her imagination always surprises me, in a good way.This is a good romp with Kitty, Jeff, and the gang style. A space opera with the groups usual wit and perservance, although I really, really, want to Chuck to have his HEA. I love Malcom and would love to know if there is a woman out there who is a perfect match for him. I guess you can say I'm totally invested in these characters. Thanks MS Koch, for giving us a series that gets better and better. I love this series and everyone in the collective. Each character brings something to the overall arch of the series.
