Although, in fact, leaving it behind has never been possible.The story begins with Eugene Smith looking back on his time in Hue, when he helped a Vietnamese detective investigate the murder of an American intelligence officer. Smith is engaged to a Vietnamese woman. He has dreams of sharing an American life with his Vietnamese wife. He thinks that solving the murder might give him the sense of closure he needs, a way to put the war away and move on to his new life. And then the Tet offensive begins, leaving tens of thousands dead, Americans and Vietnamese, and leaving Smith wounded and disabled.Decades later, Smith returns to Vietnam. Once again, he’s hunting for the intelligence officer’s killer.Tet isn’t so much a war story as it is an aftermath of war story. It is about the impact of war on Smith’s relationship, on his life and on the lives of others who survived Tet. It’s a story about courage and strength. The strongest character might be Smith’s former girlfriend, a woman Smith never really understood.The sketchy art complements the sketchy lives the story chronicles. Many panels are washed with reds, representing blood and anger. The story is short but powerful, with no wasted words. As should be true in a graphic novel, the art often carries the story.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.A dark and haunting story about loss and closureBy Wayne A McCoy'Tet' by Paul Allor tells a story spanning two time periods: the Vietnam War and a disabled veteran looking back on the events.Marine Eugene Smith falls in love with a woman from Vietnam named Quang Ha. Ha sees Eugene as her way out of a war torn country. When Eugene's fellow Marine is murdered, he's teamed up a local policeman to solve the murder. Before the investigation gets too far underway, the city explodes. Eugene is injured on his way to find Ha and is sent out of the country. Years later, he returns to the country to tie up loose ends, if such a thing is possible.The tone is dark as stories of this era are. What struck me is how a kind of noir tone informs the story. Lost love, unsolved murder and broken dreams. The art by Paul Tucker shows a vibrant countryside, while still showing the darker side of the human soul. I liked this story of how the past can haunt us and what can possibly happen if we try for closure.I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, IDW Publishing, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
