Diana Raab is a brave lady, who has fought cancer twice and won. The book is informative, inspirational and uplifting. Two words sum up this book; survival and courage. Diana is like a person who has escaped from a burning building, only to then go back inside (mentally). She has written this eBook to help others escape from that same nightmare. In sharing her journey in this book with others, Diana is extending the power of, the writing therapy technique once again; writing for Diana is a gift that keeps on giving. Diana Raab is diagnosed with breast cancer at the early age of 47 and manages to beat it, only to be diagnosed with an unrelated and incurable cancer 5 years later. Raab comes to use her journaling as a way of healing and validation. The book includes several personal journal entries as well as poems that have been written by the author and she has included writing prompts for readers to journal about their own cancer stories.Raab's memoir is very accessible to the reader. It flows in a natural, easy, and conversational way. Her poetry is intimate and allows the reader to see into her thoughts and emotions as she is dealing with her diagnosis and treatment. Raab never sugar coats the things she felt or experienced. Instead, she gives her honest feelings and opinions on everything from the doctors to the depression that came after surgery. The journaling prompts that are included are creative and urge the reader to recount parts of their own journey with cancer. Many readers who have suffered from cancer will find the exercises to be cathartic and perhaps even healing. Although she offers specific guidelines for women facing breast cancer and the loss of a breast through her own lived experience, her message of hope and taking responsibility for one's health and well-being has universal appeal for anyone who has been given a cancer diagnosis. Diana's breast cancer was identified with a mammogram as it was in the early stages and not palpable by a breast self-exam. She reinforces early detection through self-breast exams and routine mammograms , an important message for all women. Her underlying theme is that writing can be a channel for healing in the face of a devastating, life-altering diagnosis. Her openness and expression of raw honesty invites others to do the same. Each chapter ends with a writing prompt related to the unique concerns and fears of each phase of her illness and recovery as well as poems she has written that reflect her feelings and reactions. The blank pages provided under each prompt serve as a guideline for people to respond in journal fashion. Diana shows how she was proactive in seeking the best medical care in the country. While others may not have the same resources Diana had, they can still benefit from her positive, take-charge attitude. In modeling proactive behavior and showing how this was essential to her recovery, she provides a powerful message of hope and healing to others. As she reached her five-year anniversary of remission from breast cancer, she was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. I am a survivor of NonHodgkin's Lymphoma and Healing with Words resonates with my experience.
