It is an easy, concise read which summarizes the elements for good character driven stories into three nutshells (goal, motivation, and conflict). I found it tremendously helpful as I tend to spend much more energy on character and setting than on plotting (pantser here). The idea that as long as I know what my characters want, why they want it, and what might prevent them from getting it, I don't have to spend much time on plot because it creates itself appeals to me. Whether you're a pantser or a plotter, I think the information and ideas gathered in this book are well worth reading and implementing.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Debra Dixon's Classic Book Offers Real GMC (read: gems) to fiction writersBy FulanThis is a very useful book for all fiction writers. I'm using it to get some order in my confused ideas and to see what is really necessary to tell my story: Goal, Motivation and Conflict. It is very helpful to go back to the basics with Debra Dixon's book and forget all the well-meaning but in most cases superfluous ideas one gets by reading too much until you're not sure anymore what you really need and what you can safely leave out from your story. Debra Dixon's book is written in a clear compact style and you easily read it in one evening to get all the advice you may need. Dixon uses four well-known stories, The Wizard of Oz, Ladyhawke, Casablanca and the Client, to exemplify all the relevant aspects which are common to all bestseller type of stories. It's very relaxing to read an author who knows her subject inside out and to be sure that she gives you all the advice you may need in writing a book you're readers will love. It’s simple, because most books on writing craft emphasise these three aspects of writing (even if they give them different names) and powerful because conflict—internal and external—is the essence of good fiction. GMC gives a way of ensuring this is properly integrated into the entire plot, whether that is at the plotting, writing or revision stage.Dixon uses movies such as The Wizard of Oz and Indiana Jones to explain the concepts (in fact, she recommends readers watch the movies before reading the book, so they will get the full benefit).GMC is structured in four main sections: Goal, Motivation, Conflict and Scenes. Each section has a helpful list of the main points covered in the section, and the author is very persuasive in her belief that the GMC concept can help all writers, but that each writer can and will choose to apply the concept in a different way.Dixon also answers the question of why I don’t write fiction:“If conflict makes you uncomfortable or you have difficulty wrecking the lives of your characters, you need to consider another line of work.”Yes, I’ll stick with reading.I’ve read books that were obviously written using the GMC concept, and while I didn’t always like some of the characters, their purpose was clear. I’ve also read some books that obviously weren’t written based on the GMC concept, and they were lacking. Some were lacking conflict, some were lacking character goal, some were lacking in not having a single likeable character. Give conflict is the basis of all good fiction, authors will benefit from using an approach like this. Recommended.See all 109 customer reviews...
