The original editions of the book had a paper version of the map tucked into the back pocket, but it inevitably degrades. My book is from 1983, and I was quite happy to find this waterproof map is intended as a replacement -- the original map was tatters long ago.Schaffer's book is required for a serious Yosemite backpacker, so these two are a perfect match. Other trail guides are good, but for Yosemite his book is probably best. Despite its subtitle "A Complete Hikers Guide", I think it is better thought of as a backpacker's guide, although it is also good for anyone that wants a more in-depth guide to the park. The 5th edition of the book, published 2006, is available on ; its ISBN-13 is 978-0899973838.But this map isn't detailed enough for navigation; any backcountry hiker should have the appropriate USGS topo maps (7.5 minute, not available on ) -- or maybe a modern GPS unit, although depending on technological devices should be somewhat worrisome.
