Oh, they may run toy stores, or candy stores, or bookstores, or antique stores, but their real stock in trade is adventure, experience, and sometimes magic. Well now we have Mr. Powers and his pet store, and he is just a dandy addition to our roll of engaging and appealing guys.This time out we have a mildly enchanted pet store. I say mildly because this isn't a full bore get-out-your-wands and cross through the portal to fairyland kind of tale. It's more about little magicWe have four kid heroes, each with a distinct personality and with varying types and degrees of strengths and weaknesses. They are a loyal and mutually supportive band so we don't enter angsty territory. It looks like over the course of the series each kid will have a chance to be featured. In this volume it's Lexi; the second book focuses on Max. The use of a revolving group of featured players is a nice touch.(Mild SPOILERS). Here, Lexi very much wants her own dog. Her best friend Simon is moving away, along with his super neat dog. Lexi will miss Simon, and his dog, and it turns out the Toy Shop the gang helps out at is closing, and school is ready to start, and everything is just getting a little unsettled and sad. This is where the book takes an ambitious step up. This is not just a story about how Lexi gets a dog. It's a story about change, and being truthful about one's feelings, and communicating honest emotion and thoughts. That's a lot to fit in to an early reader, but with kindly Mr. Powers, a loving if strict family, a puppy, and a touch of "truth serum" magic to nudge things along, this all comes together without being preachy and with a fairly realistic light touch.What struck me most strongly at the outset is the manner in which our author has managed to tell an interesting story with a lot of suspense, excitement, feeling, fun and character, while using clear and direct language that is effective but well suited for an early reader. The writing is neither childish, nor arch, nor dense, nor "cutesy". And, there are funny little observations and throwaway lines that should strike a young reader as true and relatable.So, an upbeat and slightly fantastical tale with mild but positive messages, populated by authentic feeling and well grounded kids and adults. This could be a nice early chapter book choice.Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. A little while later they meet Mr. Power the new owner of the store which is going to be call Powers Pets. When Lexi gets home she again with the help of her brother mentions that she wants a dog to her parents, but they still tell her no. Lexi has a few things going on with the stoe closing, her best friend Simon moving, school starting soon and her birthday coming up.When Lexi goes with her parents to find out what is going on with school her envelope from the teacher ends up in the Pet Store. While she is there she meets a puppy named Luna. The store owner has the puppy do a special trick in front of Lexi and her parents and all the sudden it’s okay for her to have a dog. Lexi then takes Luna home. It doesn’t take her long to discover Luna’s trick is anything short of magic and when she does it people she talks to are forced to be honest.Lexi is excited about the new puppy and wants Simon to meet it but Simon is moving and hasn’t talked to her. She eventually catches up with him and his dog on a walk and they work things out. Lexi and her other friends soon agree to help Mr. Power in his store.This book is written in a nice playful tone. It is attention grabbing, a fast read and easy to understand. I think that aside from the magic puppy tricks and child can relate to the things that Lexi is forced to deal with in this book. I loved the illustrations and how they helped to add to the storyline.
